Mary Cassatt: Young Mother Sewing, 1900

Mary Cassatt was born to a well to do family in Philadelphia and brought up to have a traditional life as a wife and mother…but then she went to Paris to study art! – There, she saw some of Edgar Degas’ pastels in a window: “I used to go and flatten my nose against that window and absorb all I could of his art. It changed my life. I saw art then as I wanted to see it.”
