Chagall and Bella

Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985): Self-portrait in green, 1914 (Oil on card mounted on canvas, Musée national Marc Chagall) – Chagall depicts his muse, Bella, his fiancée at the time whom he would marry in 1915. As Fauvist techniques are used, the composition places all of the items around the painting’s edge revealing an empty space in the middle of the painting which is at odds with tradition and instead highlights Chagall’s modern take on a classical theme…
